Frequently Asked Questions
Individuals & Freelancers
Is income received in a personal bank account taxable?
Yes. Taxability depends on the nature of the income, not which account it lands in. Routing business or freelance income through a personal account doesn't change its tax treatment — it just makes reconciliation harder later, especially against AIS/TIS and Form 26AS.
Which ITR form applies to me?
It depends on your sources of income, residential status and the categories involved — broadly ranging from ITR-1 for simple salaried cases to ITR-4 for presumptive-taxation businesses and professionals. Filing the wrong form is a common source of processing delays and follow-up notices.
GST
Do I need GST registration if I'm a freelancer or small trader?
It depends on your turnover, the nature of your services, and whether you supply across state lines — it is not simply "freelancers don't need GST." This is one of the most common compliance mistakes we see, and it's worth a specific assessment rather than a general assumption.
Records & Filing
Do I need to maintain formal books of accounts?
If your income and turnover cross the thresholds set out under Section 44AA of the Income-tax Act (or the equivalent GST recordkeeping requirements under CGST Rule 56), yes — and "informal" tracking in spreadsheets or messages usually doesn't hold up under scrutiny.
How long do I need to retain financial records?
Statutory retention periods vary by document and applicable law. As a general rule, retaining records for at least the period during which returns for that year can still be reopened for assessment is the safer default — ask us for the specific period applicable to your situation.
Can I rely on the calculators on this site for my actual filing?
Use them for a quick, informational estimate only. They are not a substitute for professional advice, and actual figures depend on your complete financial picture — talk to us before filing based on a calculator result.
Notices & Scrutiny
I got an AIS/TIS mismatch notice — does that mean I did something wrong?
Not necessarily. AIS/TIS/Form 26AS mismatches are often reporting-side errors (by a bank, employer or platform) rather than something you did incorrectly. What matters is responding accurately and on time — ignoring it is what turns a minor mismatch into a bigger problem.
If I sign up for a monthly compliance review, will I never get a notice?
No — and we won't tell you otherwise. A monthly review meaningfully reduces the chances of a preventable notice by catching mismatches early, but no service can guarantee immunity from scrutiny. We'd rather be honest about that upfront than overpromise.
